Exploring the Factors Influencing Gender Inclusiveness in Small-Scale Fisheries: The case of Kilwa Kivinje

This study aimed to explore the factors influencing gender inclusiveness in small-scale fisheries in Kilwa Kivinje, Tanzania, focusing on Mgongeni and Magengeni. The general objective was to explore factors influencing gender inclusiveness in small-scale fisheries in Kilwa Kivinje. The specific objectives were to examine the positions of women and men in the small-scale fisheries, factors influencing their participation, and how policies support their involvement in leadership roles. Utilizing social constructionism, radical feminism, and third-world feminism theories, the study employed qualitative methods including key informant interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. Findings show that socio-cultural norms, outdated technology, and limited swimming skills restrict women’s participation in fishing, while they excel in processing and seaweed farming. Policy interventions, including interest-free loans and infrastructure improvements, have been introduced to address these gender disparities. The study concludes that while progress has been made, ongoing policy development and targeted support are essential for achieving gender equality in small-scale fisheries.

Conclusively, the study highlights significant gender disparities in Kilwa Kivinje's small-scale fisheries, with men predominantly in fishing and women in processing and seaweed farming. Despite some progress through targeted policies, more action is needed to tackle socio-cultural barriers and ensure equitable participation.

This study recommends that Fisheries policies should be updated to reflect current gender dynamics and provide comprehensive support for women's involvement across the sector. Additionally, increased investment in training and resources for women is essential to enhance inclusivity and leadership opportunities.
